It has a unique subject, based on a Hindi Play, written and Directed by Makrand Deshpande. Sona Spa brings the serious issue of lack of sleep due to various reasons that altogether causes unhealthy and tiring life.
In this fast paced urban life, one doesn’t have time to have proper sleep. Hence you are deprived of sleep. And what if you get to buy sleep?
This world is full of Fame, Glamour and money but it lacks sleep. At Sona Spa you can buy your sleep! Anytime, day or night.
It is also aimed at insomniacs, who can put a sleep worker to sleep on his behalf, thus enabling you to a better day the next morning.
Here, girls sleep for you, they are called sleep workers. Once the bonding between the client and the sleep worker is done, they will sleep for you and you can go on with your busy day. While they sleep, you will feel rested and relaxed, but they will also have access to your dreams.
Interesting.
There are negatives to this concept. The girl, who sleeps for you, also gets a direct access to your dreams and deep secrets. Things one would never want to share otherwise. In your dreams, you commit various kinds of crimes, now your sleep worker is the eye witness.
An expert or experienced sleep worker Meenakshi (Nivedita Bhattacharya) guides and advises the new recruits of sleep workers Rucha (Shruti Vyas) and Ritu (Aahana Kumra).
The newcomers now discover the hidden thoughts of their clients, and at the same time they also have their one problems and their own life.
While Rucha has come to face her struggles to deal with her alcoholic father, Ritu wants to save her dad from dying.
Meenakshi in her past has been a sex worker, and she has come to Sona Spa with hopes for a better future.
Sona Spa addresses the complexities of our daily lives, and the point conveyed across to us is to ponder upon whether it is better for us to live a deceptive life instead of succumbing to the harsh reality.
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah who is projected well on the posters, has a very small part to play in this film. Nivedita Bhattacharya as the poetic prostitute-turned-sleep worker is the most impressive of the cast.
However the execution needed to be far more convincing. For a theatre drama, the concept (technique) can be somewhat acceptable. But for a motion picture, it appears unconvincing to understand the idea of the client and the sleep worker, by just holding their palms on the opposite persons chin, and then it is shown that the “transfer “ takes place.
